The Stillwater river is a tributary to the Yellowstone river that runs approximately 70 miles through Southern Montana. It can produce some of the best dry fly fishing in Montana. This is a popular blue-ribbon fishery that runs from the Beartooth Mountains down to Columbus where it meets the Yellowstone River. This river is renowned for its abundance of rainbow trout, brown trout, and cutthroat trout.
The Best time to fish the Stillwater river is generally April-early June then July through August. Spring time offers prolific hatches like the blue-winged olive, and the Mother's Day caddis, while July and August provide great hopper fishing.
