The Bighorn River is a tributary of the Yellowstone River, 461 miles long from the states of Wyoming to Montana. The Bighorn Rive in Montana feeds from Yellowtail Dam through the Crow reservation and Bighorn Canyon Recreation Area. A year long fishery, with rainbow trout and brown trout.
The best time to fish the Bighorn River is Spring through Fall. Spring (March-May) Midge and blue-winged olive hatches begin, making for some good nymphing and some early dry fly action. Then Summer, (June-August) is the peak season with PMD, caddis, and yellow-sally hatches with hopper fishing in late July. Finally Fall (September-November) Trico and caddis hatches continue, while the water temperatures get cooler pushing fish to shallower water for excellent dry fly fishing and streamer fishing.
